Dennis J. Falk (1938 – 2012)

Our excellent friend and colleague, Dennis J. Falk, died on April 8, 2012, after battling cancer that developed following his long and distinguished career at Modrall Sperling. Denny helped build the firm’s municipal finance practice and mentored many of those who remain active in that very successful practice area. He devoted his professional heart and soul to Modrall Sperling for almost 39 years.

Denny graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and served as a pilot in the Navy for seven years. After his service in the Navy, he attended the University of Denver School of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of the law journal and graduated summa cum laude. He joined Modrall Sperling in 1970 and practiced primarily in the areas of public finance and transactions law. During his career, he served as bond counsel to the City of Albuquerque for approximately 17 years, as lead counsel on State Board of Finance matters, and as counsel to numerous other issuers, underwriters, banks, developers and trustees in public and private financing transactions. He was listed in Best Lawyers in America from 1991 until his retirement in 2008.

Denny enjoyed pursuing many activities with his family and friends, including fly fishing, skiing, traveling, golf and sparring about politics. He was modest about his flying career in the Navy, which included flying jets off aircraft carriers during the Cuban missile crisis and performing an awe-inspiring maneuver over Albuquerque after asking the love of his life, Kathy, to marry him. He was a class act and will be remembered as a fine lawyer and dear friend with the most expressive eyebrows and infectious laugh in the business.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Denny’s wife, Kathy, and children Jeff and Marnie, and their families.
