Two Trailblazing ABA Presidents Meet at UNM School of Law
When the American Bar Association President visited New Mexico in April, it provided a unique opportunity: Paulette Brown, as the first woman of color to lead the ABA, met with the first woman ever to lead the same organization, Roberta Cooper Ramo. Ramo, an attorney with Modrall Sperling, is the current president of the American Law Institute, the first woman to hold that position as well.
The two trailblazing ABA Presidents shared stories about the paths that led them to involvement and leadership in the profession and the American Bar Association.
Brown says she understands what it means to be such a pioneer. In fact, one of her goals is to promote diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. It is important to President Brown that she meets with young people across the country because she understands that “seeing a person of color in a leadership position makes a difference because it’s hard to aspire to be something you don’t see.”
After a luncheon at the University of New Mexico School of Law, the two leaders held a fireside chat, moderated by YLD Chair Spencer Edelman, also an attorney with Modrall Sperling.
