Ice Bucket Challenge Honors Retired Partner Doug Schneebeck
Dozens of Modrall Sperling attorneys, staff members and their families gathered to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Saturday, August 23, 2014. As firm president Walter Stern said before taking the icy bath himself, “We are all gathered together, doing this on behalf of our friend and partner, Doug Schneebeck, who was stricken with this disease in the prime of his life.”
Doug retired in 2011 after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Stephanie Taylor, the Modrall Sperling paralegal who organized the firm’s challenge, spurred on participants with this inspirational message: “Well, my fellow Modrallites, we have a place in this fight. We have one of our own family members who is fighting this insidious disease. So I say, let’s do this for Doug!”
Modrall Sperling participants sent the challenge to their colleagues at the Miller Stratvert, Keleher & McLeod, and Rodey Law firms.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is an awareness-building and fund-raising effort that has spread virally across the nation through challenges such as these. The original challenge was issued earlier this summer by a former Boston College baseball player, Pete Frates, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2011. Since then, the small challenge that he issued to his team and his friends has turned into a nationwide movement, raising more than $80 million dollars for ALS research.
