Sandia Pueblo Regulations First in New Mexico to Be Approved Under HEARTH Act
Sandia Pueblo has become the first Indian tribe in New Mexico (and the second in the country) to receive approval of tribal regulations under the Helping Expedite and Advance Responsible Tribal Home Ownership (HEARTH) Act. The HEARTH Act authorizes tribes to enact regulations that, once approved by the Secretary of the Interior, allow the tribe to enter into long-term leases of tribal land without further federal government review or approval. Secretary of the Interior Salazar approved Sandia’s regulations on March 14. Sandia Pueblo has announced that it intends to employ its new regulations to increase economic development on Pueblo land.
